Blood testing is an incredibly powerful tool for screening your general health. You may feel you need further investigation or blood tests in a particular area, and these can easily be arranged following a consultation with one of our experienced clinicians. Common blood tests include:
DNA
Drug and alcohol
HIV/AIDS
Diabetes
Anaemia
Coronary heart disease
Doctor referrals
Blood tests are often required by doctors to help with diagnosis. If you require blood tests following a consultation, your doctor will explain to you what tests they would suggest and why. They will also advise you on the cost of this before going ahead.
Evaluate how well organs are functioning - such as the kidneys, liver, thyroid, and heart
Diagnose diseases and conditions - such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, anaemia, and coronary heart disease
Find out whether you have risk factors for heart disease
Check whether medicines you're taking are working
Assess how well your blood is clotting
Why do I need a blood test?
A full blood count (FBC) or complete blood count (CBC) is a common blood test to check a person's general health or to screen for conditions such as anaemia, infection, and even cancer of the blood. In a laboratory the number of red cells, white cells and platelets in the blood are assessed. Blood cholesterol levels can also be measured with a simple blood test. You may be asked not to eat for 12 hours before the test (which usually includes when you're asleep) to ensure that all food is completely digested and won't affect the result, although this isn't always necessary.
Another common blood test is the basic metabolic panel to check your heart, kidney, and liver function by looking at your blood glucose, calcium, and electrolyte levels. To check for heart disease risk, you may have a lipoprotein panel that measures levels of fats in your blood, like good cholesterol (HDL), bad cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides.
