What is Meningitis B?

Children under the age of five have a high risk of contracting Meningitis B

Meningococcal infection can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord), septicaemia (blood poisoning) or both. For decades, Meningitis B has been a common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and Ireland and vaccines are the only way to reduce the risk of meningitis.

The bacterium normally lives in the back of the throat and nose and is spread through sneezing, coughing and kissing. Around one in ten people carry the bacteria without having the disease.

Meningococcal infection can occur at any age, but around half of the cases are in those under the age of five, particularly in infants less than one year. The second main age group is between 15-19 years of age (around one in four teenagers carry the bacteria).

More than nine people a day contract meningitis in the UK (Meningitis Research Foundation)

The Meningitis B vaccine is not a live vaccine and can be given with the other vaccines in the routine childhood schedule, and also at the same time as hepatitis B and varicella vaccines.
