Who should get the chickenpox vaccine?

The chickenpox vaccine is recommended for certain individuals, such as:

  • children who have not yet received the vaccine
  • non-immune healthcare workers
  • people who come into close-contact with those who have a weakened immune system

This is advised as it lowers the chance of infection those at risk. For example, if you are receiving chemotherapy treatment, it is advised that non-immune children close to you are given the vaccine.

The chickenpox vaccine is also recommended to those who are due to begin work in a radiotherapy department and have not had chickenpox before.

How does the vaccine work?

The chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine and contains a very small quantity of weakened chickenpox-causing virus. This vaccine stimulates your immune system, meaning your body produces antibodies that help against chickenpox.
