For the prevention of Human Papillomavirus

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV is the name of a very common group of viruses. They do not cause any problems in most people, but some types can cause genital warts or cancer.

There are more than 100 different types of HPV.

How Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is spread

HPV is easy to catch and many types of the virus affect the mouth, throat or genital area. HPV can be spread through other sexual encounters aside from penetrative intercourse. HPV can be spread by:

  • skin-to-skin contact involving the genital area
  • vaginal, anal or oral sex
  • sharing sex toys

There are no symptoms associated with HPV, so you may not know if you have contracted it.

Conditions linked to Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

In some people, types of HPV can cause:

  • genital warts
  • abnormal changes in cells that can turn into cancer

Types of HPV that are linked to cancer are called high-risk types. These cancers include:

  • anal cancer
  • cancer of the penis
  • cervical cancer
  • vaginal cancer
