Vaccination against Meningitis ACWY

Meningitis ACWY Vaccination

The meningitis ACWY vaccination offers protection against 4 different types of bacteria that can cause meningitis: these are meningococcal groups A, C, Y and Y.

Young teenagers and students in sixth form and first-year university students are advised to have this vaccination. The vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm.

Meningococcal disease can cause both meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). This can then potentially trigger sepsis, which is a life-threatening response to infection. Meningococcal disease while rare is very serious and requires urgent hospital treatment.

Side Effects of the Vaccine

Like all vaccines, the MenACWY vaccine can also cause side effects, but they are mild and quickly settle. The most common side effects of the vaccine in young people are redness, hardening and itching at the injection site, a high-fever, headache, nausea and fatigue. These symptoms should not last more than 24 hours.
