Overview of the Meningitis B Vaccine
The MenB (Meningitis B) vaccine is recommended for babies aged 8 weeks, 16 weeks and 1 year. The vaccine will protect your baby against infection by meningococcal group B bacteria, which are responsible for more than 90% meningococcal infections in young children. These infections can be very serious, causing meningitis and sepsis, which can lead to more severe health conditions, and in some cases, death.
The MenB vaccine used is called Bexsero. It is given as a single injection into the thigh.
Side Effects of the MenB Vaccine
It is important to note that babies given the MenB vaccine are likely to develop a high temperature (or fever) within 24 hours of the vaccination. It is important to give your baby liquid paracetamol following the vaccination to reduce the risk of fever. Your nurse will be able to give you more information about paracetamol at your appointment. We also sell paracetamol at several of our clinics.
How Does it Work?
Consultation
Meningitis vaccination appointments take around 15 minutes. One of our friendly and experienced medical staff will ensure that you feel relaxed and can answer any questions that you may have - whether about Meningitis, or anything else. All of doctors and nurses have a wealth of experience working with children and know how to make the process as quick and painless as possible.
Vaccination
Meningitis vaccinations are administered by way of an injection. Children aged 2 to 10 years require 2 vaccine doses with at least a 2-month interval between the doses. Adults and Adolescents (from 11 years) require 2 vaccine doses with at least a 1-month interval between the doses.
Booster
Meningitis B requires one booster vaccination.
Our team will make a record of the vaccination and will let you know when you are due for any follow-up booster injections, meaning that you can relax in the knowledge that you and your family are protected.
