MMR (measles, mumps and rubells) Vaccination

The MMR vaccine is an effective and safe combined vaccine.

The vaccination protects again 3 serious illnesses:

  • measles
  • mumps
  • rubella (also known as German measles)

These conditions are highly infections and therefore can easily spread between unvaccinated people. They can also lead to more complications including meningitis, hearing loss and problems during pregnancy, therefore getting vaccinated is imperative.

When should children receive the MMR vaccine?

The following is the recommended vaccine schedule for babies and children:

Child's ageVaccine
1 yearMMR (1st dose)
3 years and 4 monthsMMR (2nd dose)

If your child misses a vaccine, it is important that they catch up on these. If you have further questions regarding this, don't hesitate to book in with our specialist paediatrician or GP.

Others May Who Need to Receive the MMR Vaccine

Anyone who has not received two doses of the MMR vaccine should consult a GP for an appointment.

It is important to ensure you have received both doses if you:

  • are due to begin college or university
  • are due to travel abroad
  • are planning a pregnancy
  • are a frontline health or social worker
  • were born between 1970 and 1977, this is because you may have only been vaccinated against measles
  • were born between 1980 and 1990, as you may not be protected against mumps
