What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is the science of human mechanics

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which lays its main emphasis on the structural and mechanical problems of the body. The osteopath is concerned with the body framework and how it's functioning.

The musculoskeletal system is the largest system in the human body and is constructed of muscles, bone, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and numerous neurological components that coordinate the whole system. All other systems in the body enable optimal function and coordination for the movement and operation of the musculoskeletal system.

Osteopathy relieves and prevents pain

An osteopath can ensure that the musculoskeletal system works properly. By restoring balance the body is able function more effectively and with minimum wear and tear. Osteopathy removes the obstacles that impede normal movement by treating the structure and functions that are affected whilst also looking at the whole body system. Restoring mobility allows the body’s natural system of auto-correction to function properly, maximising health and removing pain.

Osteopaths utilise a wide variety of techniques

An osteopath may use a variety of different approaches, depending on your needs, to bring relief and improvement:

  • Soft tissue techniques
  • Manually moving the joint through its range of motion
  • Stretching muscles
  • Encouraging muscles to work against resistance
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Restoring balance and movement with gentle techniques
