Elite physiotherapists, awesome rehab gyms

Physiotherapy is essential for maximising the results of surgery. Early postoperative rehabilitation after surgery focuses on restoring mobility, strength, flexibility and reducing pain.

Here at the Medical we pride ourselves on our post-surgical physiotherapy service. All of our physiotherapists have vast experience in assessing and treating post-surgery for optimum recovery.

Some of the common surgical procedures that we rehabilitate are:

  • Knee operations - total/partial knee replacement, knee Arthroscopy (Meniscal Repair and removal), ACL reconstruction
  • Shoulder operations - rotator cuff repair, anterior stabilisation, SLAP repair, shoulder replacement
  • Lower back operations - discectomy, spinal fusion
  • Ankle operations - ankle fusion, reconstruction, loose body removal
  • Wrist operations - fusion, triangular fibro cartilage complex surgery
  • Elbow operations - bicep repair, loose body removal
  • Hernia operations
  • Hip operations - hip arthroscopy, total hip replacement, hip resurfacing

Step-by-step

Assessment

The surgeon will provide specific advice with regards to the overall management. Please bring this information as it should detail the exact procedure that has taken place and any restrictions/recommendations that the surgeon has made.

Please bring a list of medication that you are taking.

The physiotherapist will perform an in-depth assessment of the surgery to evaluate movement, strength and stability (within post-surgical limitations outlines). They will also assess the joints above and below the site of surgery. A detailed look at posture will also be performed.

The physiotherapist will need a good view of the area in question to make a full assessment so please dress appropriately or bring a change of clothes.

3D Movement Analysis

If appropriate, the physio may measure your range of movement with a state-of-the-art device called "3D Movement Analysis" which is designed to accurately measure joint function and range of movement. This will provide an excellent base of information to measure improvement against.

Scans

If necessary, we will undertake an X-ray or an MRI scan in order to understand fully what's going on. Where we don't have facilities on-site, we will refer you to an external imaging partner.

Report of Findings & Treatment Plan

Having analysed the data from the assessment, movement analysis and scans, your physiotherapist will explain the prognosis to you, and discuss the range of treatment options that are available.

Your physiotherapist will design a treatment plan that is specific to your needs. It will include an estimated recovery time, number of treatments and how to minimise the chances of the problem reoccurring.

If the physio feels that another member of our team would be better placed to help, they will refer you to them.

Treatment & Rehabilitation

Your plan will combine hands-on treatment with rehabilitation, strength and conditioning sessions.

Your hands-on treatment will take place in one of our fully equipped treatment rooms. Your physiotherapist will use a full range of techniques including ultrasound, soft tissue massage, joint mobalisation, manipulation and acupuncture.

Rehabilitation sessions take place in the gym, where our physiotherapists have access to the latest exercise equipment, 3D Movement Analysis and Gait Analysis equipment.

Progress Review

Having gone through a course of hands-on treatment and rehabilitation, your physiotherapist will track your progress by re-testing your injury using the 3D Movement Analysis system. The results will be discussed with you and we'll decide next steps together.
